TAVR: Heart Valve Replacement Without Open-Heart Surgery
Every year, thousands of Indians are told they need their aortic valve replaced, but are considered too old or too frail for open-heart surgery. For many of them, TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement), also called TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation), is now a proven alternative.
The procedure works by guiding a new valve through a thin tube inserted into an artery, usually in the leg or groin. No chest is opened. The new valve is placed inside the damaged one and begins working immediately. Most patients are walking within 24 hours and go home within three to five days.
TAVR was once reserved for the highest-risk patients. It is now recommended across all surgical risk levels, including patients who could have open-heart surgery but recover better with TAVR.
The most common reason patients need this procedure is aortic stenosis, which is a narrowing of the aortic valve that makes the heart work harder to pump blood. Symptoms include breathlessness on exertion, chest tightness, dizziness, or unexplained fatigue. Many patients live with these symptoms for years before a diagnosis is made.
Dr. Haresh Mehta has performed over 1,300 TAVR procedures at hospitals such as S.L. Raheja Hospital - Fortis, Mumbai, one of the few centres in India with a dedicated structural heart programme. He serves as Director of Interventional and Structural Cardiology and has over 35 years of experience treating complex valve disease.

TAVR, or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, is a less invasive alternative to open-heart surgery for patients with severe aortic valve narrowing. Instead of opening the chest, doctors insert the new valve through a small tube, usually via the leg. Recovery is faster, with many patients going home within 1–3 days and returning to normal activities much sooner.
MitraClip
The MitraClip is a minimally invasive treatment for mitral valve leakage, also known as mitral regurgitation. Instead of open-heart surgery, a small clip is placed on the valve through a thin tube inserted via the leg. It helps the valve close more completely, reducing the leak. Most patients return home in 1–2 days and experience a quicker, easier recovery.
